«Archeology of Consequent Forms» tries to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) could be used in the type design discipline, especially regarding the «ability» of AI to recognize patterns and «interpret» them. In practice, AI is still prone to errors, and it is the human’s role to curate the results – filtering out the «noise» produced by the machine in order to reveal innovative aspects, for instance in typeface design. This Bachelor’s dissertation also discusses the possible consequences of the use of AI in the type design process and reflects on the historical standards underlying the discipline.
«Orlando’s dissertation project deals with one of the topics that are currently most relevant for designers: the emergence of artificial intelligence and its effect on design processes. His project «Archeology of Consequent Forms» offers a unique opportunity to understand the relationship between artificial intelligence and the design of typefaces. It utilizes the constituent structure of letters and the possibilities of artificial intelligence to reveal historical and formal development forms of typefaces.» – Excerpt from the supporting statement of the Subject Area Visual Communication
«Archeology of Consequent Forms explores how modern A.I. protocols might become an integral part of the design process, specifically in the world of type design.» – Orlando Brunner
«In the future I want to continue exploring how AI technology will develop and how it can be used to better fulfill the need of designers.» – Orlando Brunner
