A Natural Disaster Waiting to Happen

Natural events are increasingly commonplace in the Alps, and often a danger to the local population. «Spitze Stei», a rock formation above Kandersteg in Switzerland, is a current example of a potential rockslide. As such, it shows what could await other regions, too. My interest in the changes in the mountain landscape has increased through my own mountain activities and forms the basis of this project. The 3D animation visualizes one of several potential rockslide scenarios. It allows us to experience a disaster that has not yet happened. For this project, research data from the Institute of Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) was translated into a popular-scientific visualization, thus making a complex scenario accessible to a wide audience. The 3D animation was published in different digital media, which further enhances access to the information it provides.

Interview Elena Kaeser.

«This 3D animation skilfully combines a model-like yet immersive visual language with the linear temporality of a rockslide. The project is carefully thought-out and designed, and accomplished with considerable technical complexity. The understated means of design – a view of a model world and a possible future scenario – provide a sober look at the drama and avoid being sensationalist and geared towards effects. As a balancing act between matter-of-factness and emotion, the project is an ideal example of excellent knowledge visualization, and has great potential to be developed into a research project. The first step towards this has already been taken, as part of an approved JRD project in conjunction with geological research.» – Excerpt from the supporting statement of the Subject Area Knowledge Visualization

«The 3D animation enables viewers to immerse themselves in a dangerous situation and thereby increases their awareness of the environment and its changes.» – Elena Kaeser

Elena Kaeser works at the interface between design and science, with a focus on the visualization of complex scientific content. She is particularly interested in addressing topical and relevant subjects. During her Bachelor’s studies in Knowledge Visualization she became increasingly fascinated by moving images and 3D visualizations. In her dissertation «Bergdrama» («Alpine Drama») she combined her design skills and scientific interests.
