Farmers have long days, their work is hard and the pressure is huge. On top of this, they face more and more regulations, as well as criticism from society. Making a farm viable for the future is challenging. The documentary «muck out, milk, manage – when daughters take over a farm» offers a closer look at the lives of four female farmers. They talk about what it means to run a farm and why they keep going despite the tough conditions and personal setbacks. Sarah, Nadia, Andrea and Sophie all have taken over their fathers’ farms in the last four years and are gradually making them their own. They are all motivated by a passion for farming. In addition to the documentary, the Instagram channel @misten_melken_managen shows the lives of other female farmers and provides information on topics such as farming and nature.
«With her documentary and complementary Instagram channel, Désirée has created a comprehensive package which opens up the world of four female farmers in Switzerland and conveys the passion for their work. The additional Instagram channel has been carefully designed and curated to provide insights into the lives of other female farmers as well as information about farming and nature. The project stands out in terms of research, realization and scope, making this subject accessible to a wider audience beyond a specific farming interest.» – Excerpt from the supporting statement of the Subject Area Cast/Audiovisual Media
«The complementary Instagram channel adds multimedia content so the topic can be discussed in multifaceted and varied ways.» – Désirée Ottiger
«I had already worked in television when I started my degree course, and that’s where I also see my future as a designer. Creating programmes for a general audience requires creative solutions, commitment and enjoyment in what you do, and I feel very much at home in that world.» – Désirée Ottiger
